CONTENTS EDITORIAL NEWS 4 News at and about MOTOREX INTERVIEW 6 What does “sustainable” mean? Interview with CEO Edi Fischer DEVELOPMENT 8 Green innovations fit for the future SUSTAINABILITY IN THE ENTERPRISE Dear customers, dear readers INDUSTRY 12 Process optimization with the Swisscare Management System PRODUCTION 16 Continual enhancements of infrastructure and processes PRODUCTS 20 Customers want sustainability – four focus areas with potential Sustainability has become something of a worn-out buzzword, too often trotted out in emotional debates over climate change, environmental protection, CO 2 emissions, internal combustion engines versus electric motors, and many more. Those who claim to act sustainably are usually also laying claim to moral superiority. The term “sustainability” is by definition multi-layered. It involves weighing up the diverging objectives of various stakeholder groups and timelines. Most companies are pursuing a goal of sustainable, long-term existence. They have no choice but to keep weighing up alternatives, over and over. The needs of customers, employees, the state, the environment, and society are manifold. As a rule, the needs of generations to come are a high priority in the enterprise. Unfortunately, the opposite is all too often the case in the political realm. Those who, in pursuit of electoral success, advance special interests while denying challenges or passing them down to the next generation (such as the repayment of the sovereign debt taken on in response to the coronavirus crisis) can hardly claim to be acting sustainably. Expert opinions on technologies for mobility differ widely. Electric drive trains will not wholly replace the internal combustion engine. Even the diesel engine may try to stage a comeback. But internal combustion engines will have to adapt to new, CO 2- friendly fuels such as natural gas or synthetic fuels. Hydrogen may also play a role. As a lubricant producer, we have spent years improving our products along three axes of sustainability: • new motor oils and transmission fluids to reduce fuel consumption and with it CO 2 emissions • expanding our range of hugely popular bio-lubricants with their state-of-the-art engineering and outstanding cost-efficiency • refining our approach to chemistry to safeguard workers and protect health In this issue you’ll learn how MOTOREX also pursues sustainability goals in its internal processes and procedures.
