MOTOR OIL POINTING THE

MOTOR OIL POINTING THE WAY: COMPLETE RANGE OF MOTOR OILS The number of manufacturer-specific motor oil standards has been constantly rising since 2000, resulting in an ever-wider range of oils. That’s why MOTOREX attaches great importance to advising customers on the right oil for them. In 2000 there were no manufacturer-specific standards to speak of beyond the umbrella ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles) and API (American Petroleum Institute) quality standards. Today there are well in excess of 40! These “in-house” approvals result in an extremely broad range of requirements for motor oils. These are becoming increasingly diverse, and even professionals can have difficulty keeping track. This is where MOTOREX’s specialist knowledge comes into play. Not only does the up-to-date technical expertise of MOTO- REX’s partners and Technical Customer Service guarantee the best possible advice from a technical perspective, but MOTOREX’s clearly structured complete motor oil product range also covers the entire spectrum of approvals and applications. Whether you’re a dealership, multi-make or service garage, at MOTOREX you’ll receive the finest all-round service. OFFICIALLY LISTED? Behind in-house approvals are the special motor oil test programs of individual manufacturers such as BMW, Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Renault, VW-Group and many more. These define a specific performance spectrum based on strict requirements from the development engineers that a motor oil is expected to fulfill. When a new motor oil is developed, these OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) requirements become part of the process. Then the oil has to be tested by the OEM. A product can only officially indicate an approval once it has passed the tests and meets the manufacturer’s requirements. For example, there are cheap motor oils that boast of many approvals but are not officially listed by the OEM. For garage operators, this means manufacturers will refuse to honor their warranty in the event of damage caused by one of these oils. Because MOTOREX attaches great importance to transparency. All officially designated approvals are listed with the OEM. OEM test procedures are generally more complex and involved than those for the ACEA and API umbrella standards. EVERY MANUFACTURER HAS ITS STANDARD MOTOREX’s motor oil range includes over 25 different products for all current engine generations and perfor m- 8

ance classes. For dealerships, meeting specific manufacturers’ motor oil specifications and the associated warranty services is mandatory. Here MOTOREX offers brandspecific solutions, for example the PROFILE and CONCEPT motor oils, which are highly efficient but still economical. FOR MULTI-MAKE GARAGES TOO When it comes to choosing one motor oil that has manufacturer’s approval for as many different engines as possible, the XPERIENCE, SELECT and TOPAZ lubricants from the MOTOREX CAR LINE are just the thing. For example, MOTOREX SELECT SP-X SAE 5W/40 has been approved by Audi, BMW, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda and VW! And with a practical range of container sizes (1, 4, 60 and 200 l), it’s no problem to have small quantities of a make-specific motor oil on hand for service jobs, just in case. The properties of the “engineering element” called motor oil are precisely specified and tested by engine manufacturers. ADVICE INCLUDED Having a carefully chosen selection of the right motor oils on hand in the shop sets the stage for efficient, cost-efficient working. This is where you can call on the extremely valuable advice of your MOTOREX partner. What’s more, this service is free to customers! There is also a search engine to help customers find the right oil for them at www.motorex.com. Need to know what’s the best motor oil for a given vehicle? Just use our search engine at www.motorex.com/ oilfinder, or ask your MOTOREX partner for advice. • FACTORS AFFECTING CAR MOTOR OIL DIVERSITY Motor oils (standard viscosity) (SAE 15W/40) (SAE 10W/40) (SAE 5W/30) Motor oil diversity (SAE 0W/20) Year Exhaust gas API and ACEA standards legislation and manufacturers’ approvals AGVS 1986 (Switzerland/CH) 1986 CMC oil specifications No significant manufacturers’ approvals EURO 0 FAV 1-1 (CH) 1990 EURO 1 1993 Introduction of ACEA oil specifications EURO standards adopted in CH EURO 2 1996 1997 First OEM manufacturers’ standards (VW TDI 505 01) API = American Petroleum Institute ACEA = Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer 2000 0 OEM manufacturers’ standards EURO 3 4 ACEA and approx. 12 OEM manufacturers’ standards 7 ACEA standards with the three new C classes 22 OEM manufacturers’ standards 8 ACEA (introduction of C4 class) and approx. 30 OEM manufacturers’ standards 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2001 EURO 4 2006 2007 EURO 5 2011 8 ACEA and approx. 48 OEM manufacturers’ standards 2013 EURO 6 2015 Approx. 50 2018 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 MOTOREX CARLINE BROCHURE www.motorex.com MOTOREX MAGAZINE 102 I JULY 2014 9
