REPORT Photos: ZSG The Panta Rhei is the youngest member of the ZSG fleet and its newest motor launch. Its three decks have room for 700 passengers. With a length of 56 meters and an 11 meter beam, the vessel is driven by two 600-hp MAN turbo diesel engines. NAVIGATION ON LAKE ZURICH: Providing transportation and dreams since 1891 Life is good on the banks of Lake Zurich. Greater Zurich is a pulsating agglomeration of a million inhabitants. The 88 square kilometers of Lake Zurich are a zone of quiet amidst all the hustle and bustle. Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) provides transportation on these waters. Whether you’re commuting to work on a canal boat on the Limmat or cruising into the safe harbor of marriage aboard one of ZSG’s two paddlewheel steamers, MOTOREX lubricants are hard at work below decks. A MUCH-LOVED LAKESHORE Navigation on the lake, which was formed during the last ice age, has a long tradition. The banks of Lake Zurich were settled as early as 4000 BC, and these early inhabitants were the first to launch boats on the lake’s waters. Remains of pillar foundations testify to their presence. In the Middle Ages, the lake gained steadily in importance as a major international trade route, bear- ing goods toward Walensee and the Graubunden passes and, after development of the Gotthard Pass, from Zurich to Horgen. A BOAT SERVES AS “TRAM” On March 19, 1834, entrepreneurs Franz Carl Caspar and Johann Jakob Lämmlin founded a steamer company on Lakes Zurich and Walen. Their first steamboat, 10

Built over a six-month period, the paddlewheel steamer Stadt Zürich was launched and christened in Zurich on May 8, 1909. Total area: 88.66 km 2 . Widest point: between Stäfa and Richterswil, 3.85 km. Deepest point: between Herrliberg and Oberrieden, 143 m. Inflow: Linth (Linth Canal). Outflow: Limmat. Last time the lake froze over: 1962–63 Boatyard master Ruedi Wegmann and his team work closely with MOTOREX. Besides the quality products, they especially appreciate the on-the-spot technical support and the informative oil analysis that aids in technical troubleshooting. the Minerva, was built in Manchester, UK, and began oper ating in July 1835. Remember, there was no railroad at the time, and the first automobile would not arrive on the scene for half a century! After various highs and lows, economic and otherwise, the Zürcher- Dampfboot-Aktien-Gesellschaft (Zurich Steamboat Joint-Stock Company) was established in 1891. A series of new screw-propelled steamers was commissioned to pro vide a “tramlike” suburban transportation service on the lake. As technology advanced, one generation of boats followed another across the decades. The word Dampf (steam) vanished from the company name in 1957. Since 1990 the ZSG has been part of Zurich’s public transportation system, more than achieving the status of “tram” to which it once aspired. FLEET SAILS 362,501 KM PER YEAR ZSG’s current fleet is made up of 15 motor launches and two steamers. Each year they cover an average of 361,654 kilometers on Lake Zurich, operated by a hundred dedicated employees. In 2011 the company generated sales of CHF 19 million in the following three areas: • Scheduled services and excursions (approx. 60%) • Specials (approx. 25%) • Boat rentals for exhibitions such as Expovina (approx. 15%) “In 1957 the word ‘Steam’ vanished from the company name” A key success factor, says boatyard master Ruedi Wegmann, is the reliability of the boats. That’s why ZSG does all its own maintenance and overhauls at its boatyard at Mythenquai 333 in Zurich. The winter break is an ideal time to service the vessels. While the smaller boats Forch and Zimmerberg and the launches Panta Rhei, Uetliberg, Pfannenstiel and Albis hold stolidly to their sailing timetables, some of the larger motor launches and the two paddlewheel steamers spend the winter at rest at the boatyard undergoing major overhauls.
