INDUSTRY Switching to

INDUSTRY Switching to MOTOREX ORTHO TX machining fluid has also helped improve the work environment on the shop floor. When the SMED method was introduced, MOTOREX was there not only to provide high-performance universal cutting oil, but also valuable know-how. The Japanese method is designed to facilitate rapid tool changes and setup times. Boillat Technologies produces high-tech parts for all leading industries on several generations of machine tools. Implementing the SMED method required a thorough analysis and reorganization of every aspect of machining fluid use. MOTOREX ORTHO TX PAVES THE WAY Before it adopted SMED (single minute exchange of die), Boillat Technologies used twelve different machining fluids. Now it uses just one! Boillat Technologies in Loveresse, a tranquil town in the French-speaking portion of Canton Berne, has always moved with the times. Since its foundation in 1962, the factory has been expanded several times. Today it provides jobs for some 40 highly motivated workers from the region. The company’s current machinery pool caters for an extremely wide range of dimensions, with diameters from 0.5 to 51 mm. FROM THE TRIED AND TRUSTED… Experience shows that giving up old work habits for the sake of improvement is never easy. The same is generally true for the emulsions and cutting oils that are used. In many cases, once a product has been chosen as right for a given material or process, it is still in use years later. The result is the variety of lubricants mentioned above, leading to long turnaround times and high downtime costs at production changeover as each machine is pumped out, cleaned and replenished. When the SMED method was introduced, the time had come to find a more efficient and universal solution. …TO NEW SOLUTIONS In dialogue with Technical Customer Service and the sales rep for the account, all production steps were identified, production capacities recorded and tool lives determined. When the data was evaluated and customer needs appraised, it was found that SWISSCUT ORTHO TX high-performance cutting/deep-drilling and broaching oil could meet every requirement. The new fluid proved a success right from the very first production batches. Two viscosities of SWISSCUT ORTHO TX (ISO VG 15 and 22) are used for maximum performance whatever the workpiece. BENEFITS OF A MULTIPURPOSE CUTTING FLUID The need for a universal cutting oil was met in ORTHO TX. Of course, even in a universal fluid, any compromise on performance was out of the question. The switch provided several benefits at once for the user. Each and every machining step can now be performed with one and the same cutting oil. SWISS- CUT ORTHO TX meets the most demanding requirements associated with the most challenging machining processes carried out on difficult to cut materials. But switching to a single fluid also greatly simplified logistics and substantially increased process reliability. Moreover, the absence of undesirable substances such as chlorine and heavy metals has improved the quality of the work environment and cut disposal costs by half. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED “Continuous optimization is a must in any manufacturing operation”, explains Jacques Boillat with a hint of pride. “A combination of motivated workers, professional suppliers and new workflow methods has made the roll-out of SMED at our company a great success.” We will be glad to provide information on the latest generation of MOTOREX machining fluids and on optimization options for your business. • Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) This method is designed to reduce the changeover time for production machines or lines. This is the period from completion of the last good piece in one production lot to the first good piece in the next and includes time spent preparing the new material or resetting machine parameters – in short, time when nothing is being produced. The objective of SMED is to reduce stock levels by achieving an efficient production flow with as few interruptions as possible and optimum production lot sizes. The key process Jacques Boillat, CEO and owner in achieving this aim is production of Boillat Technologies in line retooling when switching from Loveresse. one product model to the next. 16 MOTOREX MAGAZINE I JULY 2011 17
