Industry Photos: KRAL AG, Lustenau Industry MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X ISO 15 recently underwent user testing at KRAL AG, the highly regarded Austrian manufacturer of screw spindle pumps and flow meters. The results are convincing. KRAL AG tests ORTHO NF-X 15 Successful milling operations demonstrate that ORTHO cutting oils meet the requirements for all workpiece sizes. Precision is KRAL’s top priority for both screw spindle pumps and complex barturning pieces. “Finding a high-quality cutting oil is no easy task,” says a recently published article in KRAL AG’s employee magazine. Three times now the Lustenau, Austriabased manufacturer of precision screw spindle pumps and flow meters has carried out tests of different cutting oils from various suppliers on a screw spindle milling machine. Each time the machine had to be completely cleaned down and refilled, but until now not one test delivered the level of improvement hoped for. Test candidate number 4: MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X MOTOREX and its Austrian importer METZLER GMBH & CO KG had to present some very convincing arguments to persuade KRAL’s specialists to run another test. But this time was different. During the very first test run on a GLEASON-PFAUTER P60 spindle milling machine, cutting speed in milling complex geometries was increased by 20%. This performance boost was achieved without any further changes, and the test manager, Rene Schröter, was convinced that he had found the right machining fluid. Herbert Hopp and Stefan Splinter, who attended the test, also expected further improvements of up to 10%. The specialists also eagerly observed swarf formation, the oil’s heat conductivity characteristics and of course the surface quality (Ra value). ORTHO NF-X ISO 15 received top marks on all three quality indicators in milling the stainless steel screw spindles. The oil’s low viscosity of only 15 mm 2 /s also allowed the oil delivery pump to run at its full 200 l/min capacity, ensuring optimum swarf removal and cooling. The faster machining speed further enabled better pitch and lead precision during milling operations. More exact and longer-term testing is still needed to determine distortion characteristics in Tenifer finishing (see box), but here too initial results are very promising… Experience from the test clearly shows that the universally applicable high-performance cutting oil MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X pulls off the trick of being suited not only for all materials, but also for all machining modes. These aspects are what vastly increase operating flexibility What is Tenifer finishing? • A hardening process. Oxidizing pre-treatment and post-treatment in a molten salt bath before and after a mechanical smoothing process (salt bath carbonitriding). and make MOTOREX ORTHO cutting oils so appealing to precision turning and metal machining pros. Full utilization of enhanced performance Over a dozen additives in MOTOREX ORTHO yield measurably enhanced cutting values and flawless surface finishes. To keep heat build-up within clearly defined bounds, a special additive is used to define and restrict friction and associated heat to a pre-determined range. Thanks to the enhanced cutting figures delivered by MOTOREX v MAX TECHNOLOGY, the resultant heat can be applied deliberately to positively influence the machining process with higher production speed at the decisive moment. However, these desirable chemical synergy effects can only take place if work speed is fast enough. This is a challenge to the machine operators, who can gradually adjust the machining parameters to increase productivity. Faster machining pays off Cutting speed on the spindle milling machine mentioned at the beginning of this article was increased by 20% in the first stage of testing by using ORTHO NF-X ISO 15 with no other changes. On two machines operated in two shifts, this means an increase from 7,700 to 9,500 machine-hours per year. At an hourly rate of € 50, this additional capacity is worth € 90,000 – a substantial gain! We would be delighted to provide more information on the new generation of ORTHO cutting oils and provide active support for your testing. Please contact your MOTOREX partner now to get a free-of-charge consultation about the MOTOREX v MAX TECH- NOLOGY and the new generation of MOTOREX ORTHO cutting oils. MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X uses the synergies created to substantially enhance performance. Despite its low ISO 15 viscosity, MOTOREX ORTHO NF-X displays extreme pressure resistance. Satisfaction on the faces of KRAL employees in Lustenau, Austria. The internationally operating company uses MOTOREX products. 12 10 13
